Speaking

I thoroughly enjoy chances to speak at a range of events—from retreats to church gatherings, and from conferences to colleges to brainstorming sessions on the future of worship, theology, and the arts. While my calendar usually fills up a year in advance, there are often opportunities that I will take last-minute, if circumstances afford it.

The speaking engagements that I enjoy the most, from experience, are the ones that allow me to get to know people in personal and relational ways. It’s always about the people.

My usual speaking fee is $3,000. I take two things seriously with this fee: the care and time that I devote to prepare for a new talk and the demands that travel away places on my family back home.

While my fee isn’t to be confused with the Law of the Medes and Persians—which is to say, that I also try be flexible with a group’s given budget—I start with this amount because it is what does justice to the work involved and to my selfless wife who holds the fort down while I’m gone.

In addition to preaching and teaching, the topics that I enjoy speaking on include:

  • Art and Faith

  • Art and the Church

  • Art and Theology

  • Art and Spiritual Formation

  • Art and Beauty
